Additional Information
In order to read Vietnamese documents, you will need a Vietnamese TTF font produced by VPS (Vietnamese Professional Society - Hoi Chuyen Gia Viet Nam). Please take note or print out this procedure (applicable for Microsoft Windows systems only):
- You first need to download a self-extract file, vpsfont.exe, by clicking here
- Store it in a temporary directory on your hard disk, such as C:\TEMP
- Run program vpsfonts.exe from your PC. The VPS font files, VPS*.TTF, will be generated in that C:\TEMP directory
- To install those VPS fonts into your Windows 3.x system:
Run Control Panel -- Fonts
Select "Install New Fonts"
Select directory C:\TEMP, and then, the VPS fontsSimilarly, for Windows-95, -98 & NT:
Click My Computer -- Control Panel -- Fonts
Click File. Select Install New Fonts
Select directory C:\TEMP, and then, the VPS fonts
In most cases for Windows-95/98 and NT systems, you don't need to specify a VPS font as a "default" for your browser. However, if you still cannot read the Vietnamese document, then you must specify the VPS font as the default font.
* If you use Netscape Navigator (version 4.x):
- Click on "Options" to pull down the submenu.
- Now select "General Preferences" option.
- Select "Fonts" panel.
- On the line "For the Encoding:" , select "User-Defined"
- On the line "Use the Proportional Font:" , click on the "Choose Font" and select "VPS Times" and its size (e.g 12 or 14 points).
- On the line "Use the Fixed Font:" , click on the "Choose Font" and select "VPS Courier" and its size (e.g. 10 or 12 points).
- Click the "OK" button to accept the choices and exit.
- Click on "Options" to pull down the submenu again.
- Then select "Document Encoding" at the bottom, then "User Defined" .* If you use MS Internet Explorer (versions 3x, 4x, 5x):
- Click on "View" to pull down the submenu.
- Now select "Internet Options..." option.
- Select "General" panel.
- Click on "Font Settings..." button. In the new "Fonts" window:
- In the "Character Sets" box, highlight "User Defined".
- At the pulldown menu "Propotional font" , select "VPS Times" .
- At the pulldown menu "Fixed-width font" , select "VPS Courier" .
- At the pulldown menu "Font Size", selec "Medium"
- Click the box "Set as Default"Click the "OK" button to accept the choices and exit.
*** If the web page still fails to display proper Vietnamese fonts (as in the newer IE version 5):
- right click anywhere on the screen
- select "Encoding"
- untick "Auto Select"
- tick either "Western European (ISO)" or "User Defined"* If you use American Online (AOL) browsers (this advice was given by a friend some time ago, I am not sure if it is still relevant for new versions of AOL browser) :
AOL's own browser does not support customized fonts. To view VPS-based documents, follow these steps:
-- Make sure you are running AOL version 3.0, or later. If you are running AOL 2.5, you will have to download and install AOL's winsock.dll.
-- Download Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Install either browser.
-- Download vpsfont.exe and install VPS fonts in your Windows system as above.
-- Configure your Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer to include the VPS fonts, as above. Now log on to AOL, and run Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer as your browser.
Have fun!
