2: Dasasikkhàpadàni
The Ten Training Rules

 

i.     Pàõàtipàtà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from killing living creatures

ii.     Adinnàdànà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from taking what has not been given

iii.     Abrahmacariyà veramaõsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from unchastity

iv.     Musàvàdà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from false speech

v.     Suràmerayamajjapamàdaññhànà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from liquor, wines, or intoxicants which cause heedlessness.

vi.     Vikàlabhojanà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from eating at the wrong time

vii.     Naccagãtavàditavisåkadassanà veramaõã-sikkhàpadaü
I undertake the training rule of refraining from dances, songs, music, and watching shows

viii.     Màlàgandhavilepanadhàraõamaõóanavibhåsanaññhànà
I undertake the training rule of refraining from adorning or      

          veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
          ornamenting (oneself) by wearing garlands, scents, or ointments                         

ix.     Uccàsayanamahàsayanà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from lofty or grand beds

x.     Jàtaråparajatapañiggahaõà veramaõãsikkhàpadaü samàdiyàmi
I undertake the training rule of refraining from accepting gold or money

 

3: Dvattiüsàkàraü
The Thirty Two Fold Nature

 

Atthi imasmiü kàye:
There are in this body:

kesà, lomà, nakhà, dantà, taco,
hairs of the head, body hairs, nails, teeth, skin,

maüsaü, nahàru, aññhi, aññhimi¤jà, vakkaü,
flesh, sinews, bones, bone-marrow, kidney,

hadayaü, yakanaü, kilomakaü, pihakaü, papphàsaü,
heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs,

antaü, antaguõaü, udariyaü, karãsaü,
intestines, mesentery, undigested food, excrement,

pittaü, semhaü, pubbo, lohitaü, sedo, medo,
bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat,

assu, vasà, kheëo, singhànikà, lasikà, muttaü,
tears, grease, spit, mucus, synovic fluid, urine,

matthake matthalungan-ti.
and the brain in the head.

The Questions to the Boy

 

Eka nàma kiü?
What is said to be one?

Sabbe sattà àhàraññhitikà.
All beings subsist on food.

Dve nàma kiü?
What is said to be two?

Nàma¤-ca råpa¤-ca.
Name-and-form.

Tãõi nàma kiü?
What is said to be three?

Tisso vedanà.
The three feelings.

Cattàri nàma kiü?
What is said to be four?

Cattàri ariyasaccàni.
The four noble truths.

Pa¤ca nàma kiü?
What is said to be five?

Pa¤cupàdànakkhandhà.
The five constituents (of mind and body) that are attached to.

Cha nàma kiü?
What is said to be six?

Cha ajjhattikàni àyatanàni.
The six internal sense spheres.

Satta nàma kiü?
What is said to be seven?

Satta Bojjhangà.
The seven factors of Awakening.

Aññha nàma kiü?
What is said to be eight?

Ariyo aññhangiko maggo.
The noble path with eight factors.

Nava nàma kiü?
What is said to be nine?

Nava sattàvàsà.
The nine abodes of beings.

Dasa nàma kiü?
What is said to be ten?

Dasah' angehi samannàgato Arahà ti vuccatã ti.
When endowed with ten factors he is said to be Worthy.

 

5: Mangalasuttaü
The Discourse on the Blessings

 

               Evaü me sutaü:
              This is what I heard:

ekaü samayaü Bhagavà Sàvatthiyaü viharati
at one time the Auspicious One was dwelling near Sàvatthi

Jetavane Anàthapiõóikassa àràme.
at Anàthapiõóika's grounds in Jeta's Wood.

Atha kho a¤¤atarà devatà abhikkantàya rattiyà,
Then a certain god, at the end of the night,

abhikkantavaõõà kevalakappaü Jetavanaü obhàsetvà,
having lit up the whole of Jeta's Wood with his surpassing beauty,

yena Bhagavà tenupasankami,
approached the Auspicious One,

upasankamitvà Bhagavantaü abhivàdetvà ekam-antaü aññhàsi.
and after approaching and worshipping the Auspicious One, he stood on one side.

Ekam-antaü ñhità kho sà devatà Bhagavantaü gàthàya ajjhabhàsi:
While standing on one side that god recited this verse to the Auspicious One:

 

1.       ßBahå devà manussà ca Þ mangalàni acintayuü
ßMany are the gods and the men Þ who have thought about the blessings

          àkankhamànà sotthànaü: Þ bråhi mangalam-uttamaü.û
hoping for safety: Þ now please say what is the supreme blessing.û

 

2.       ßAsevanà ca bàlànaü, Þ paõóitàna¤-ca sevanà,
ßNot associating with fools, Þ with the wise associating,

          påjà ca påjanãyànaü: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
honouring those worthy of honour: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 
3.       Pañiråpadesavàso ca, Þ pubbe ca katapu¤¤atà,

Living in a suitable place, Þ formerly having done good deeds,

          attasammàpaõidhi ca: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
having the right aspiration for oneself: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

4.       Bàhusacca¤-ca sippa¤-ca, Þ vinayo ca susikkhito,
Having great learning and craft, Þ being disciplined and well trained,

          subhàsità ca yà vàcà: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
and whatever words are well spoken: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

5.       Màtàpitu-upaññhànaü, Þ puttadàrassa sangaho,
Attending on one's mother and father, Þ looking after one's wife and sons,

          anàkulà ca kammantà: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
having work that is not confusing: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

6.        Dàna¤-ca Dhammacariyà ca, Þ ¤àtakàna¤-ca sangaho,
Giving, and living by the Dhamma, Þ and looking after one's relatives,

          anavajjàni kammàni: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
(performing) actions that are blameless: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

7.        ârati virati pàpà, Þ majjapànà ca sa¤¤amo,
Abstaining, refraining from bad deeds, Þ restraint fom intoxicating drink,

          appamàdo ca dhammesu: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
being heedful regarding (all) things: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

8.        Gàravo ca nivàto ca, Þ santuññhã ca kata¤¤utà,
Having respect and being humble, Þ being satisfied and grateful,

          kàlena Dhammasavaõaü: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
listening to the Dhamma at the right time: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 
9.        Khantã ca sovacassatà, Þ samaõàna¤-ca dassanaü,

Being patient and easily spoken to, Þ having sight of ascetics,

          kàlena Dhammasàkacchà: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
discussing the Dhamma at the right time: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

10.     Tapo ca brahmacariya¤-ca, Þ ariyasaccàna' dassanaü,
Austerity, living spiritually, Þ seeing into the noble truths,

          Nibbànasacchikiriyà ca: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
and experiencing Nibbàna: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

11.     Phuññhassa lokadhammehi, Þ cittaü yassa na kampati,
He whose mind does not waver, when it is touched by things of this world,

          asokaü virajaü khemaü: Þ etaü mangalam-uttamaü.
being griefless, dustless, and secure: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

12.      Etàdisàni katvàna, Þ sabbattha-m-aparàjità,
Having done as here directed, Þ being undefeated everywhere,

          sabbattha sotthiü gacchanti: Þ taü tesaü mangalam-uttamanû-ti.
they go everywhere in safety: Þ for them this is the supreme blessing.û

6. Ratanasuttaü
The Discourse on the Treasures

 

1.              Yànãdha bhåtàni samàgatàni,
         Whatever beings have come together here,

               Bhummàni và yàni va antalikkhe,
         whether of the earth or in the firmament,

               sabbe va bhåtà sumanà bhavantu,
         may the minds of all those beings be happy,

               atho pi sakkacca suõantu bhàsitaü.
         and may they listen carefully to what is said.

 

2.          Tasmà hi bhåtà nisàmetha sabbe,
         Therefore, all of you beings, be attentive,

               mettaü karotha mànusiyà pajàya,
         be friendly towards this generation of men,

                  divà ca ratto ca haranti ye baliü,
         they who bring offerings by day and by night,

              tasmà hi ne rakkhatha appamattà.
         as they are heedful please protect them.

 

3.            Yaü ki¤ci vittaü - idha và huraü và
         Whatever riches there are - here or hereafter

               saggesu và - yaü ratanaü paõãtaü
         or in the heavens - that excellent treasure

               na no samaü atthi Tathàgatena -
         is not equal unto the Realised One -

               idam-pi Buddhe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:

               etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

4.            Khayaü viràgaü amataü paõãtaü -
         (Craving's) end, dispassion, deathlessness, excellence -

               yad-ajjhagà Sakyamunã samàhito -
         that which the concentrated Sakyan sage attained -

               na tena Dhammena sam' atthi ki¤ci -
         there is nothing that is equal to the Dhamma -

               idam-pi Dhamme ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:

               etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

5.            YamBuddhaseññho parivaõõayã suciü -
         That which the great Buddha praised as being pure -

               samàdhimànantarika¤-¤am-àhu -
         the concentration said to have immediate (result) -

               samàdhinà tena samo na vijjati -
         no equal to that concentration is found -

               idam-pi Dhamme ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma

               etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

6.            Ye puggalà aññha satam-pasatthà -
         Those eight individuals praised by the good -

               cattàri etàni yugàni honti -
         there are these four pairs (of persons) -

               te dakkhiõeyyà Sugatassa sàvakà,
         those disciples of the Fortunate One are worthy of gifts,

               etesu dinnàni mahapphalàni -
         those things that have been given to them have great fruit -

               idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

               etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

7.            Ye suppayuttà manasà daëhena
         Those who have firm minds that are devoted to

               nikkàmino Gotamasàsanamhi -
         Gotama's teaching, being free from sense desire -

               te pattipattà amataü vigayha -
         having attained and entered the deathless -

               laddhà mudhà nibbutiü bhu¤jamànà -
         are enjoying the stillness, obtained for free -

               idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

               etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

8.            Yath' indakhãlo pañhaviü sito siyà
         Just as a locking post stuck fast in the earth

              catubbhi vàtehi asampakampiyo,
         does not waver on account of the four winds,

              tathåpamaü sappurisaü vadàmi,
         just like this, I say, is the person who is true,

              yo ariyasaccàni avecca passati -
         the one who sees the noble truths completely -

              idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

9.           Ye ariyasaccàni vibhàvayanti,
         Those who clearly distinguish the noble truths,

              gambhãrapa¤¤ena sudesitàni,
         which have been well preached by the one with great wisdom,

              ki¤càpi te honti bhusappamattà
         no matter how great they become in heedlessness

              na te bhavaü aññhamaü àdiyanti -
         still they do not take up an eighth existence -

              idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

10.         Sahà v' assa dassanasampadàya
         Together with his attainment of seeing (Nibbàna)

              tayas su dhammà jahità bhavanti:
         there are three things that are given up:

              sakkàyadiññhi vicikicchita¤-ca
         embodiment view, uncertainty, and

              sãlabbataü và pi yad-atthi ki¤ci.
         whatever (grasping at) virtue and practices there is.

              Catåh' apàyehi ca vippamutto,
         He is free from (rebirth in) the four lower worlds,

              cha càbhiñhànàni abhabbo kàtuü -
         and he is incapable of the six great crimes -

              idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

11.         Ki¤càpi so kammaü karoti pàpakaü
         Whatever bad actions he performs

              kàyena vàcà uda cetasà và,
         by way of body, speech, or mind,

              abhabbo so tassa pañicchàdàya:
         he is incapable of covering it up:

              abhabbatà diññhapadassa vuttà -
         this incapacity is said of one who has seen the state (of peace) -

              idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

12.         Vanappagumbe yathà phussitagge
         Just like a tall woodland tree crowned with flowers

              gimhànamàse pañhamasmiü gimhe,
         in the summer months, in the early summer,

              tathåpamaü Dhammavaraü adesayã,
         just like this he preached the Dhamma which is best,

              Nibbànagàmiü paramaühitàya -
         which goes to Nibbàna, the highest benefit -

              idam-pi Buddhe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 

13.         Varo vara¤¤å varado varàharo,
         The best one, knowing the best, gave the best, brought the best,

              anuttaro Dhammavaraü adesayã -
         he preached the best Dhamma, which is unsurpassed -

              idam-pi Buddhe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

 
14.         Khãõaü puràõaü navaü n' atthi sambhavaü,

         The old is destroyed, and nothing new is produced,

              virattacittà àyatike bhavasmiü,
         their minds are unexcited by future rebirth,

              te khãõabãjà aviruëhichandà,
         they have destroyed the seeds, and have no desire for growth,

              nibbanti dhãrà yathà 'yam-padãpo -
         the wise are still, just as this lamp (is still) -

              idam-pi Sanghe ratanaü paõãtaü:
         this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:

              etena saccena suvatthi hotu!
         by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

15.         Yànãdha bhåtàni samàgatàni,
         Whatever beings have come together here,

              bhummàni và yàni va antalikkhe,
         whether of the earth or in the firmament,

              tathàgataü devamanussapåjitaü
          we (all) revere the realised Buddha who is

              Buddhaü namassàma suvatthi hotu!
         honoured by gods and men - may there be safety!

 

16.         Yànãdha bhåtàni samàgatàni,
         Whatever beings have come together here,

              bhummàni và yàni va antalikkhe,
         whether of the earth or in the firmament,

             tathàgataü devamanussapåjitaü
          we (all) revere the realised Dhamma which is

              Dhammaü namassàma suvatthi hotu!
         honoured by gods and men - may there be safety!

 

17.         Yànãdha bhåtàni samàgatàni,
         Whatever beings have come together here,

              bhummàni và yàni va antalikkhe,
         whether of the earth or in the firmament,

              tathàgataü devamanussapåjitaü
          we (all) revere the realised Sangha which is

              Sanghaü namassàma suvatthi hotu!
         honoured by gods and men - may there be safety!

Ratanasuttaü Niññhitaü
The Discourse on the Treasures is Finished

 

7. Tirokuóóasuttaü
The Beyond the Walls Discourse

 

1.    Tirokuóóesu tiññhanti, Þ sandhisiïghàñakesu ca,
They stand beyond the walls, Þ and at the junctions and crossroads,

      dvàrabàhàsu tiññhanti, Þ àgantvàna sakaü gharaü.
they stand at the door-posts, Þ having come to their (former) homes.

2.    Pahåte annapànamhi, Þ khajjabhojje upaññhite,
But when abundant food and drink, Þ both staple and non-staple, is prepared,

      na tesaü koci sarati Þ sattànaü kammapaccayà.
no one remembers these Þ beings, because of their (past unwholesome) deeds,

3.    Evaü dadanti ¤àtãnaü Þ ye honti anukampakà,
Thus those who are compassionate give to their (departed) relatives,

      suciü paõãtaü kàlena, Þ kappiyaü pànabhojanaü.
at the right time, pure, excellent, Þ suitable drink and food.

4.   ßIdaü vo ¤àtinaü hotu, Þ sukhità hontu ¤àtayo!û
(thinking:) ßMay this go to our relatives, Þ may our relatives be happy!û

      Te ca tattha samàgantvà, Þ ¤àtipetà samàgatà
Those who have gathered, Þ the departed relatives who have assembled

5.   pahute annapànamhi, Þ sakkaccaü anumodare:
around the food and drink, Þ respectfully offer their thanks:

      ßCiraü jãvantu no ¤àtã! Þ Yesaü hetu labhàmase,
(saying:) ß May our relatives live long! Þ Those to whom we owe this gain,

6.   amhàka¤-ca katà påjà, Þ dàyakà ca anipphalà!û
for we have been honoured, Þ those who give are not without reward!û

      Na hi tattha kasã atthi, Þ gorakkh' ettha na vijjati,
For in that place there is no ploughing, Þ and cattle-rearing is not found there,

7.   vaõijjà tàdisã n' atthi, Þ hira¤¤ena kayakkayaü.
similarly there is no trading, Þ or buying and selling of gold.

      Ito dinnena yàpenti, Þ petà kàlakatà tahiü.
The departed in that place, who have died, (have to) subsist on gifts.

8.   Unname udakaü vaññaü, Þ yathà ninnaü pavattati,
Just as water that rains on the highlands, flows down to the lowlands,

      evameva ito dinnaü, Þ petànaü upakappati.
so too what has been given here Þ is of benefit to the departed.

9.   Yathà vàrivahà pårà Þ paripårenti sàgaraü,
Just as rivers that are full Þ (flow and) fill up the ocean,

      evameva ito dinnaü, Þ petànaü upakappati.
so too what has been given here Þ is of benefit to the departed.

10. ßAdàsi me, akàsi me, Þ ¤àtimittà sakhà ca me,û
(Thinking:) ßHe gave to me, he worked for me, Þ he was my relative, my friend, my companion,û

      petànaü dakkhiõaü dajjà, Þ pubbe katam-anussaraü.
he should give gifts for the departed, Þ remembering what they have done before.

11. Na hi ruõõaü va, soko và, Þ yà c' a¤¤à paridevanà,
For no tears, or grief, Þ or any other lamentations,

      na taü petànam-atthàya, Þ evaü tiññhanti ¤àtayo.
are of any use to the departed, Þ as long as their relatives continue (grieving) in this way.

12. Ayaü kho dakkhiõà dinnà, Þ Sanghamhi suppatiññhità,
But that gift that has been given, Þ and well placed in the Sangha,

      dãgharattaü hitàya 'ssa, Þ ñhànaso upakappati.
is of benefit to them for a long time, Þ immediately it is of benefit.

13.           So ¤àtidhammo ca ayaü nidassito -
            This then is the definition of a relative's duties -

                petàna' påjà ca katà uëàrà,
            (and by this) great honour has been done to the departed,

                bala¤-ca bhikkhånam-anuppadinnaü,
            strength has also been given to the monks,

                tumhehi pu¤¤aü pasutaü anappakaü!
            and no little merit has been produced by you!

Tirokuóóasuttaü Niññhitaü
The Beyond the Walls Discourse is Finished

 

8. Nidhikaõóasuttaü
The Discourse on the Amount of Savings

 

1.      Nidhiü nidheti puriso Þ gambhãre odakantike:
A man stores his savings Þ in a deep pit close to water (thinking:)

      ßAtthe kicce samuppanne Þ atthàya me bhavissati,
ßWhen a duty or need has arisen Þ it will be there to help me,

2.     ràjato và duruttassa, Þ corato pãëitassa và,
 to free me from a king if slandered, or from molestation

      iõassa và pamokkhàya, Þ dubbhikkhe àpadàsu vàû.
from a thief, or from a debt, or famine, or accidentû.

      Etad-atthàya lokasmiü Þ nidhi nàma nidhãyati.
For his kind of help, savings are stored up in the world.

3.     Tàva sunihito santo Þ gambhãre odakantike,
Although it is well stored Þ in a deep pit, close to water,

      na sabbo sabbadà eva Þ tassa taü upakappati,
still, it cannot help him in all things on every occasion,

4.     nidhi và ñhànà cavati, Þ sa¤¤à và 'ssa vimuyhati,
for perhaps those savings are removed from that place, Þ or he forgets the signs (telling where they lie),

      nàgà và apanàmenti, Þ yakkhà và pi haranti naü,
or nàgas take them away, Þ or yakkhas carry them off,

5.     appiyà và pi dàyàdà Þ uddharanti apassato,
or the heirs he dislikes Þ extract them unseen,

      yadà pu¤¤akkhayo hoti Þ sabbam-etaü vinassati.
and when his merit comes to an end Þ all of it will be destroyed.

6.     Yassa dànena sãlena, Þ saüyamena damena ca,
 But that woman or man who through giving, virtue,

      nidhã sunihito hoti, Þ itthiyà purisassa và,
restraint, and self-control has well stored up his savings,

7.     cetiyamhi va Sanghe và, Þ puggale atithãsu và,
(placing them) in a shrine, or in the Sangha, Þ or in an indivdual, or a guest,

      màtari pitari và pi, Þ atho jeññhamhi bhàtari,
or in his mother or father, Þ also in an elder brother,

8.     eso nidhi sunihito, Þ ajeyyo anugàmiko.
those savings are well stored up Þ they follow one, they do not decay.

      Pahàya gamanãyesu, Þ etaü àdàya gacchati.
(Riches) he gives up when he has to leave (this life) Þ but this goes along (with him).

9.     Asàdhàraõa-m-a¤¤esaü, Þ acoràharaõo nidhi,
It is not shared with others, Þ no thief carries those savings away,

      kayiràtha dhãro pu¤¤àni, Þ yo nidhi anugàmiko.
the wise man should make merit, Þ (for) those savings follow one along.

10.   Esa devamanussànaü Þ sabbakàmadado nidhi,
These savings satisfy every desire of gods and men,

      yaü yad-evàbhipatthenti Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
whatever they wish for, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

11.   Suvaõõatà, sussaratà, Þ susaõñhànasuråpatà,
A good appearance, a good voice, Þ a good shape, a good form,

      àdhipaccaparivàro, Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
sovereignty, and a retinue, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

12.   Padesarajjaü, issariyaü, Þ cakkavattisukham-pi yaü,
A local kingship, an empire, Þ and whatever happiness a Wheel- Rolling (King) has,

      devarajjam-pi dibbesu, Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
also godly kingship in the heavens, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

13.    Mànusikà ca sampatti, Þ devaloke ca yà rati,
Human good fortune, Þ delight in the world of the gods,

      yà ca Nibbànasampatti, Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
even the attainment of Nibbàna, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

14.   Mittasampadam-àgamma, Þ yoniso ca payu¤jato,
With the attainment of (good) friends, Þ devotion to systematic (thought),

      vijjà vimutti vasãbhàvo Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
there is the power of understanding and freedom, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

15.   Pañisambhidà, vimokkhà ca, Þ yà ca sàvakapàramã,
The discriminations, and the liberations, Þ and whatever perfections the disciples have,

      Paccekabodhi, Buddhabhåmi, Þ sabbam-etena labbhati.
Individual Awakening, the Buddhas' ground, Þ through this (merit) they receive all.

16.    Evaü mahatthikà esà, Þ yadidaü pu¤¤asampadà,
So this is of great benefit, Þ that is to say, the attainment of merit,

      tasmà dhãrà pasaüsanti Þ paõóità katapu¤¤ataü.
therefore the wise and intelligent (always) praise the making of merit.

9: Mettasuttaü
The Discourse on Friendliness Meditation

 

1.  Karaõãyam-atthakusalena, Þ yan-taü santaü padaü abhisamecca:
What should be done by one skilful in good, who has comprehended the state of peace:

    sakko ujå ca såjå ca, Þ suvaco c' assa mudu anatimànã,
he ought to be able, straight, and upright, easy to speak to, meek, without conceit,

2.  santussako ca subharo ca, Þ appakicco ca sallahukavutti,
satisfied (with little), easy to support, free from duties, and light in living,

    santindriyo ca nipako ca, Þ appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho,
with faculties at peace, prudent, not forward, and greedless among the families,

3.  na ca khuddaü samàcare ki¤ci Þ yena vi¤¤å pare upavadeyyuü.
he should not do the slightest thing whereby others who are wise might find fault (with him).

    ßSukhino và khemino hontu, Þ sabbe sattà bhavantu sukhitattà!
ß(May all beings) be happy and secure, may all beings in their hearts be happy!

4.  Ye keci pàõabhåt' atthi - Þ tasà và thàvarà và anavasesà,
Whatsoever breathing beings there are - trembling, firm, or any other (beings),

    dãghà và ye mahantà và, Þ majjhimà rassakà aõukathålà,
whether they be long or great, of middle size, short, tiny, or of compact (body),

5.  diññhà và ye va addiññhà, Þ ye ca dåre vasanti avidåre,
those who are seen, and those who are unseen, those who live far away, those who are near,

    bhåtà và sambhavesã và - Þ sabbe sattà bhavantu sukhitattà!û
those who are born, and those who still seek birth - may all beings in their hearts be happy!û

6.  Na paro paraü nikubbetha, Þ nàtima¤¤etha katthaci naü ka¤ci,
No one should cheat another, nor should he despise anyone wherever they be,

    byàrosanà pañighasa¤¤à Þ nतam-a¤¤assa dukkham-iccheyya.
he should not long for suffering for another because of anger or resentment.

7.  Màtà yathà niyaü puttaü Þ àyusà ekaputtam-anurakkhe,
In the same way as a mother would protect her son, her only son, with her life,

    evam-pi sabbabhåtesu Þ mànasaü bhàvaye aparimàõaü,
so toward all beings he should develop the measureless thought (of friendliness).

8.  Metta¤-ca sabbalokasmiü Þ mànasaü bhàvaye aparimàõaü,
Towards the whole wide world he should develop the measureless thought of friendliness,

  uddhaü adho ca tiriya¤-ca, Þ asambàdhaü averaü asapattaü.
above, below, and across (the middle), without barriers, hate, or enemy.

9.  Tiññhaü caraü nisinno và, Þ sayàno và yàvat' assa vigatamiddho,
Standing, walking, sitting, lying, for as long as he is without torpor,

  etaü satiü adiññheyya, Þ brahmam-etaü vihàraü idha-m-àhu.
he should be resolved on this mindfulness, for this, they say here, is the (true) spiritual life.

10.  Diññhi¤-ca anupagamma, Þ sãlavà dassanena sampanno,
Without going back to (wrong) views, virtuous, and endowed with (true) seeing,

  kàmesu vineyya gedhaü, Þ na hi jàtu gabbhaseyyaü puna-r-etã ti.
having removed (all) greed for sense pleasures, he will never come to lie in a womb again.
