New Masters Course in Pali:                                                                  < Back

Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Stuides started a masters course in Pali in 2004. The Course covers canonical and post-canonical Pali literature, grammar and composition, history of Pali literature and studies in prosody. Professors Ratna Wijetunga, Kapila Abhayawansa and Sumanapala Galmangoda and Ven. Dr. Madagama Nandawansa and Ven. Dr. Nabirittankadawara Nanratana are among the instructors.

Currently the Course is taught in Sinhala. The Institute expects to conduct the Course in English medium starting from the next year. It is also expected that a Postgraduate Diploma course in Pali will be started in the next year and depending on the availability of students the Course will be taught in both Sinhala and English.

The Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of the University of Peradeniya started a certificate course in Buddhism for the benefit of those who are desirous of receiving an introductory but systematic knowledge in Buddhism. The classes are conducted both in English and Sinhala on Saturdays and Sundays at the Department. Professors P.D.Premasiri, P.B. Megaskumbura, Anuradha Seneviratne and Dr. H.S.S. Nissanka and the senior staff members of the Department are the instructors. The course coordinator is the Ven. Muva-atagama Gnanananda.

Professor Asanga Tilakaratne, Joint Secretary to Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies, has been appointed the Director at the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (University of Kelaniya) by the University Grants Commission from December 2003 for three years.

A one-day seminar consisting exclusively of presentations of the graduate students in Buddhist studies was held at the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies on the 26th April, 2004. Papers were presented both in English and Sinhala mediums. The Institute plans to organize the event annually.

Professor P.D. Premasiri, President, slabs, will be serving as a visiting professor at the Department of Philosophy at Washington State University during this Fall (August - December 2004). He will conduct courses on ethical theory and Indian philosophy with special emphasis on Buddhism.

The Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies has advertised a professorial position in the field of Pali studies. The position is for a full time professorship, but candidates at Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor levels will also be considered. The deadline for application is 6th September, 2004.
