Pali Text Society, Pali English Dictionary (edited entry):
Muta: thought, supposed, imagined (i.e. received by other vaguer sense imprssions than by sight and hearing) M I.3. Often in set diÂÂha suta muta what is seen, heard and thought (? more likely "felt,"...so that from the interpretation it follows that d.s.m.v. refer to the action (perception) of the 6 senses, where muta covers the 3 of taste, smell and touch, and vi¾¾¤ta the function of the manas) S I.186. Similarly the psychological analysis of the senses at D.III.232. Thus quite a main tenet of the old (popular) psychology. |
