PTS: The Path of Purity, (Buddhaghosa's Visuddhimagga) Pe Maung Tin, trans., pp586 [on Samudaya]: And the sound saµ denotes connection in such words as sam¤gamo, sametaµ (coming-together, concurrence). The sound u[d] denotes uprising in such words as uppannaµ, uditaµ (uprisen, spring up). The sound aya shows reason. And this second truth shows the reason for the uprising of ill when it is connected with other causes than itself. Hence as being the reason for the uprising of ill when in connection with causes, it is called the origin of ill.
