The second son of King Esukárí's chaplain. He was born in the world of men at Sakka's request.

His father had him brought up among the keepers of horses (assapálá) so that he might not wish to renounce the world.

His brothers were Hatthipála, Gopála and Ajapála. He followed Hatthipála into the ascetic life and lived on the banks of the Ganges (J.iv.476ff).

He was Sáriputta in the present age (J.iv.491).
