The grounds of the building were laid out by Pandukábhaya (Mhv.x.90; xvii.30).
Gajabáhu I. first erected the Mahejjásanasálá (Mhv.xxxv.122).
The Mahávamsa Tíká (p.378) explains that Mahejavatthu is a shrine (devatthána) dedicated to the Yakkha Maheja.
