A district in Malaya (in Ceylon) often sought as a place of refuge -  e.g., by Kassapa, son of Upatissa III. (Cv.xli.19); Jetthatissa, son of Asiggáhaka Sanghatissa (Cv.xliv.28) and Potthakuttha (Cv.xlvii.58).

Vijayabáhu I. gave Merukandara as dowry to his daughter, Yasodhará, who married Víravanna (Cv.lix.27).

The village of Vacávátaka was in Merukandara. Cv.lxx.282.
