A householder of Rájagaha. He was a follower of the Buddha, and it was his conversation with the Paribbájaka Nigrodha that led to the preaching of the Udumbarika Síhanáda Sutta.
Buddhaghosa says (DA.iii.832) that he was the leader of five hundred upásakas and was an anágámin. On one occasion, the Buddha sang his praises in the assembly for six qualities which he possessed. In the Anguttara he is mentioned in a list of eminent lay disciples (A.iii.451; cf. Dvy.540).
