He belonged to a brahmin family of Sumsumáragiri and entered the Order, after hearing the Buddha preach in Bhesakalávana. One fast day, while seated where the Pátimokkha was being recited, he pondered on the advantages to be gained by the confession of faults, and uttered eagerly, "How utterly pure is the teaching of the Buddha."
