ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ Viyagga Baddja Sutta ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ [Excerpts from a sermon given by Ven. Thallale Dhammananda at the Wat Pa Buddharangsee, Lumea on 8/4/90] Historically this Sutta is reputed to be the result of a request made by Prince Dhiga Janu Koliya Putta to the Buddha, requesting him to advise the average lay-person who is burdened with the care of family and society in the real world of day to day living. In brief, the Buddha advocated four positive qualities to be cultivated, viz: 1. 'Utthana Sampada' Striving deligently, without lazyness to make an honest living 2. 'Aarakkha Sampada' Looking after One's resources deligently 3. 'Kalyana Mithatha' Association with wise friends 4. 'Sama Jeevithatha' Living within One's means .PA ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³Viyagga Baddja Sutta (continued) ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ Further he admonished the avoidence of the following four negativities, viz: 1. 'Stri-dhuratha' Comitting of adultry and over indulgence in sensual pleasures 2. 'Akkha-dhuratha' Gambling with One's limited resources 3. 'Sura-dhuratha' Indulging in Intoxicants and drugs 4. 'Papa-Mithatha' Association with evil persons And for further spiritual advancement he advocated the cultivation of the following four factors, viz: 1. 'Saddha' Confidence in the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha 2. 'Seela' Morality to prevent remorse 3. 'Thiyagga','Caga' Generosity and sharing for common good 4. 'Panna' Wisdom, through 'Bhavana' or mental culture
