183.     Sabbapàpassa akaraõaü, Þ kusalassa upasampadà,
Not doing any bad deeds, Þ undertaking wholesome deeds,

            sacittapariyodapanaü - Þ etaü Buddhàna' sàsanaü.
and purifying one's mind - Þ this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

 

184.                 Khantã paramaü tapo titikkhà,
                   
Forbearing patience is the supreme austerity,

            Nibbànaü paramaü vadanti Buddhà.
       
Nibbàna is supreme say the Buddhas.

                        Na hi pabbajito paråpaghàti,
                   
One gone forth does not hurt another,

            samaõo hoti paraü viheñhayanto.
       
(nor does) an ascetic harrass another.

 

185.     Anåpavàdo, anåpaghàto, Þ pàtimokkhe ca saüvaro,
Not finding fault, not hurting, Þ restraint in regard to the precepts,

            matta¤¤utà ca bhattasmiü, Þ panta¤-ca sayanàsanaü,
knowing the correct measure in food, Þ (living in) a remote dwelling place,

            adhicitte ca àyogo - Þ etaü Buddhàna' sàsanaü.
being devoted to meditation - Þ this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

277.      Sabbe saïkhàrà aniccà ti, Þ yadà pa¤¤àya passati,
All conditioned things are impermanent, Þ when one sees this with wisdom,

            atha nibbindati dukkhe - Þ esa maggo visuddhiyà.
then one grows tired of suffering - Þ this is the path to purity.

278.      Sabbe saïkhàrà dukkhà ti, Þ yadà pa¤¤àya passati,
All conditioned things are suffering, Þ when one sees this with wisdom,

            atha nibbindati dukkhe - Þ esa maggo visuddhiyà.
then one grows tired of suffering - Þ this is the path to purity.

 
279.      Sabbe dhammà anattà ti, Þ yadà pa¤¤àya passati,
All things are without a self, Þ when one sees this with wisdom,

            atha nibbindati dukkhe - Þ esa maggo visuddhiyà.
then one grows tired of suffering - Þ this is the path to purity.

            Bhavatu sabbamaïgalaü, Þ rakkhantu sabbadevatà,
May there be every blessing, Þ and may all of the gods protect you,

            sabbabuddhànubhàvena Þ sadà sotthi bhavantu te!
by the power of all the Buddhas Þ may you be safe forever!

 

            Bhavatu sabbamaïgalaü, Þ rakkhantu sabbadevatà,
May there be every blessing, Þ and may all of the gods protect you,

            sabbadhammànubhàvena Þ sadà sotthi bhavantu te!
by the power of all that is Dhamma Þ may you be safe forever!

 

            Bhavatu sabbamaïgalaü, Þ rakkhantu sabbadevatà,
May there be every blessing, Þ and may all of the gods protect you,

            sabbasaïghànubhàvena Þ sadà sotthi bhavantu te!
by the power of the whole Sangha Þ may you be safe forever!

            âkàsaññhà ca bhummaññhà Þ devà nàgà mahiddhikà,
May those powerful gods and nàgas Þ stationed in the sky or on the earth,

            pu¤¤aü taü anumoditvà Þ ciraü rakkhantu sàsanaü!
having rejoiced in this merit Þ protect the teaching for a long time!

 

            âkàsaññhà ca bhummaññhà Þ devà nàgà mahiddhikà,

            pu¤¤aü taü anumoditvà Þ ciraü rakkhantu desanaü!
having rejoiced in this merit Þ protect the preaching for a long time!

1.         Iminà pu¤¤akammena Þ upajjhàyà guõuttarà,
By this meritorious deed Þ may my highly virtuous preceptors,

            àcariyåpakàrà ca, Þ màtà pità piyà mamaü,
teachers, and other helpers, Þ my dear mother and father,

2.         Suriyo Candimà ràjà, Þ guõavantà narà pi ca,
the Sun and Moon kings, Þ and also other virtuous beings,

            brahmà màrà ca indrà ca, Þ lokapàlà ca devatà,
brahmas, màras, and indras, Þ and (all) world-protecting gods,

3.         Yamo mittà manussà ca Þ majjhaññhà verikàpi ca -
Yama, friendly humans, neutral persons, and also foes -

            sabbe sattà sukhã hontu Þ pu¤¤àni pakatàni me.
may all beings be happy Þ with these my natural merits.

4.         Sukha¤-ca tividhaü dentu Þ khippaü pàpe yathà mataü,

By these meritorious deeds, Þ by this dedication, may bad deeds

            iminà pu¤¤akammena Þ iminà uddisena ca.
be as though dead, and may (these merits) give the threefold happiness.

5.         Khippàhaü sulabhe c' eva Þ taõh'-upàdànachedana,
May I quickly and easily (see the) cutting off of craving and attachment,

            ye santàne hãnà dhammà Þ yàva Nibbànato mamaü -
and the whole succession of low things Þ until I arrive at Nibbàna -

6.         nassantu sabbadà yeva Þ yattha jàto bhave bhave.
may (these things) be destroyed every day Þ in whatever existence I am born.

            Ujucitto satipa¤¤o, Þ sallekho viriyavàminà,
Upright mind, mindfulness, wisdom, Þ austerity, and energy, by these (qualities),

7.         màrà labhantu n' okàsaü Þ kàtu¤-ca viriyesu me,
may the màras find no room Þ to do (anything) about my energy,

            Buddho dãpavaro nàtho, Þ Dhammo nàtho varuttamo,
The Buddha is an excellent light, a protector Þ the Dhamma is the greatest, most excellent protector,

8.         nàtho paccekasambuddho, Þ Saïgho nàtho 'ttaro mamaü,
the individual Sambuddha is my protector, Þ the Sangha is the greatest protector for me,

            tejo'-ttamànubhàvena Þ màr' okàsaü labhantu mà.
by this highly resplendent power Þ may the màras find no room.

Advice

Appamàdena bhikkhave sampàdetha:
Strive on, monks, with heedfulness:

Buddh'-uppàdo dullabho lokasmiü,
the arising of a Buddha in this world is rare,

manussattà pañilàbho dullabho,
acquiring a human existence is rare,

dullabhà saddhà sampatti,
gaining confidence is rare,

pabbajitabhàvo dullabho,
being one gone forth is rare,

Saddhammasavanaü atidullabhaü.
hearing the True Dhamma is extremely rare.

Evaü divase divase ovàdã:
So day in and day out he advised them thus (saying):

ßHanda dàni bhikkhave àmantayàmi vo vayadhammà saïkhàrà,
ßCome now, monks, for I tell you (all) conditioned things are subject to decay,

appamàdena sampàdetha!û
strive on with heedfulness!û

    

   

Vajjapakàsanaü
Confession of Faults

 
            Kàyena vàcà cittena Þ pamàdena mayà kataü,

For any transgression I have committed through heedlessness, by way of body,

            accayaü khama me bhante, Þ bhåripa¤¤a Tathàgata.
speech, or mind, please forgive me, Venerable Sir, Realised One, O greatly wise.

 

            Kàyena vàcà cittena Þ pamàdena mayà kataü,

For any transgression I have committed through heedlessness, by way of body,

            accayaü khama me Dhamma Þ sandiññhika, akàlika.
speech, or mind, please forgive me, O Dhamma, which leads on, not subject to time.

 

            Kàyena vàcà cittena Þ pamàdena mayà kataü,

For any transgression I have committed through heedlessness, by way of body,

            accayaü khama me Saïgha, Þ pu¤¤akkhettaü anuttara.
speech, or mind, please forgive me, O Sangha Þ unsurpassed field of merit.

 

Okàsa vandàmi bhante,
With your consent, Venerable Sir, I worship you,

okàsa dvàrattayena kataü sabbaü aparàdaü khamatha me bhante.
please consent to forgive me, Venerable Sir, for any offences I have committed by way of the three doors (of body, speech, or mind).

(Yathà pi me khamitabbaü!) or (Khamàmi, khamitabbaü!)
(In the same way you must forgive me!) or (I forgive you, you should forgive me!)

Okàsa khamàmi bhante!
With consent, I forgive you, Venerable Sir!

   

Vuddhipatthànaü
Benediction

 
            Abhivàdanasãlissa Þ niccaü vaddhà pacàyino,
For one in the habit of constantly worshipping respectable elders,

            cattàro dhammà vaóóhanti Þ àyu, vaõõo, sukhaü, balaü.
four things increase Þ length of life, beauty, happiness, and strength.

            âyuràrogyasampatti Þ saggasampatti-m-eva ca,
The attainment of long life and health, Þ the attainment of heaven,

            atho Nibbànasampatti Þ iminà te samijjhatu!
and then the attainment of Nibbàna Þ may you be successful in this!

Worship of the Buddha


Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammàsambuddhassa
Reverence to him, The Auspicious One, The Worthy One, The Perfect Sambuddha

 
            Vandàmi cetiyaü sabbaü Þ sabbaññhànesu patiññhitaü,
I worship all the shrines Þ in all of the places that they stand,

            sàrãrikadhàtu Mahà Bodhiü, Þ Buddharåpaü sakalaü sadà!
the bodily relics, the Great Bodhi Tree, Þ and all the Buddha images forever!

 
            Ghanasàrappadittena Þ dãpena tamadhaüsinà,

With a lamp that burns intensely, destroying the darkness,

            tilokadãpaü Sambuddhaü Þ påjayàmi tamonudaü.
I worship the Sambuddha, the light of the three worlds, the darkness-dispeller.

 
            Sugandhikàyavadanaü, Þ anantaguõagandhinaü,

With this fragrance and perfume I worship the Realised One,

            Sugandhinàhaü gandhena Þ påjayàmi Tathàgataü.
who is fragrant in body and speech, and has fragrant endless virtues.

 
            Sugandhaü sãtalaü kappaü, Þ pasannamadhuraü subhaü,
Please accept this fragrant, cool, clear, sweet, and attractive drink

            pànãyam-etaü Bhagavà, Þ patiggaõhàtu-m-uttama!
that has been prepared, Þ O Auspicious One supreme!

 
            Adhivàsetu no bhante, Þ bhojanaü parikappitaü,
Please consent, venerable Sir, Þ to accept this food we have prepared,

            anukampaü upàdàya, Þ patiggaõhàtu-m-uttama!
out of compassion (for us) Þ please receive it, O Supreme One!

 
            Adhivàsetu no bhante, Þ khajjakaü parikappitaü,
Please consent, venerable Sir, Þ to accept these edibles we have prepared,

            anukampaü upàdàya, Þ patiggaõhàtu-m-uttama!
out of compassion (for us) Þ please receive it, O Supreme One!

 
            Vaõõagandhaguõopetaü, Þ etaü kusumasantatiü,

With these long lasting flowers, endowed with the qualities of beauty

            påjayàmi Munindassa Þ siripàdasaroruhe.
and fragrance, I worship the glorious lotus feet of the lord of Sages.


