ârakkhà Bhàvanà
Protective Meditations

            Buddhànussati, mettà ca, Þ asubhaü, maraõassati -
Recollection of the Buddha, friendliness, Þ unattractiveness, and mindfulness of death -

            iti imà caturàrakkhà Þ bhikkhu bhàveyya sãlavà.
these are the four protective meditations Þ that a virtuous monk should develop.

            Anantavitthàraguõaü Þ guõato 'nussaraü Muniü,
Recollecting the Sage's virtue, and his endless, extensive, good qualities,

            bhàveyya buddhimà bhikkhu Þ Buddhànussati-m-àdito.
the wise monk should develop Þ the recollection of the Buddha first.

Recollection of the Buddha
(ârakkhà Bhàvanà 1)

 

1.         Savàsane kilese so Þ eko sabbe nighàtiya,
Alone he destroyed all the corruptions, and (bad) predispositions,

            ahå susuddhasantàno Þ påjànaü ca sadà 'raho.
and being continually and fully pure Þ he is worthy of worship at all times.

2.         Sabbakàlagate dhamme Þ sabbe sammà sayaü Muni
The Sage by himself has, in every way, completely awakened to all things

            sabb' àkàrena bujjhitvà, Þ eko sabba¤¤utaü gato.
throughout the whole of time, Þ and alone he has arrived at omniscience.

3.         Vipassan'-àdi vijjàhi Þ sãl'-àdi caraõehi ca,
Being endowed with great psychic power, good conduct, virtue, and so on,

            susamiddhehi sampanno, Þ gagan' àbhehi nàyako.
true understanding, insight, and so on, Þ the leader was like the shining sky.

4.         Sammàgato subhaü ñhànaü Þ amoghavacano ca so,
He who never spoke foolish words, has arrived at that glorious state (Nibbàna),

            tividhassàpi lokassa Þ ¤àtà niravasesato.
he knew the threefold world system (completely) without leaving anything out.

5.         Anekehi guõ'-oghehi Þ sabbasattuttamo ahå,
Overflowing with countless good qualities Þ he is supreme among all beings,

            anekehi upàyehi Þ naradamme damesi ca.
with countless skilful means Þ he tamed those men who could be tamed.

6.         Eko sabbassa lokassa Þ sabbam-atthànusàsako,
He alone, to the whole world Þ was the teacher of everything good,

            bhàgyaissariy'-àdãnaü Þ guõànaü paramo nidhã.
he is the highest treasure, having qualities such as good fortune, mastery, and so on.

           
7.         Pa¤¤à 'ssa sabbadhammesu Þ karuõà sabbajantusu,
Being wise in regard to all things Þ compassionate to everybody,

            att'-atthànaü par'-atthànaü Þ sàdhikà guõajeññhikà.
he exceeded (others) in the best qualities, (knowing) what was for his own and others' good.

8.         Dayàya pàramã citvà Þ pa¤¤ày' attànam-uddharã,
Through sympathy he set his mind on the perfections Þ through wisdom he raised himself up,

            uddharã sabbadhamme ca, Þ dayày' a¤¤e ca uddharã.
he raised himself above all things, Þ through sympathy he raised others too.

9.         Dissamàno pi tàva 'ssa Þ råpakàyo acintayo,
Even his visible form-body was beyond thought,

            asàdhàraõa-¤àõ'-aóóhe Þ dhammakàye kathà vakàti?
what can be said of his spiritual body, which was unique, having powerful knowledge?

 

 

Mahamaïgalasuttaü
The Discourse on the Great Blessings

            Evaü me sutaü:
            This is what I heard:

ekaü samayaü Bhagavà Sàvatthiyaü viharati
at one time the Auspicious One was dwelling near Sàvatthi

Jetavane Anàthapiõóikassa àràme.
at Anàthapiõóika's grounds in Jeta's Wood.

Atha kho a¤¤atarà devatà abhikkantàya rattiyà,
Then a certain god, at the end of the night,

abhikkantavaõõà kevalakappaü Jetavanaü obhàsetvà,
having lit up the whole of Jeta's Wood with his surpassing beauty,

yena Bhagavà ten' upasaïkami, upasaïkamitvà
approached the Auspicious One, and after approaching

Bhagavantaü abhivàdetvà ekam-antaü aññhàsi.
and worshipping the Auspicious One, he stood on one side.

Ekam-antaü ñhità kho sà devatà Bhagavantaü gàthàya ajjhabhàsi:
While standing on one side that god recited this verse to the Auspicious One:

1.         ßBahå devà manussà ca Þ maïgalàni acintayuü
ßMany are the gods and the men Þ who have thought about the blessings

            àkaïkhamànà sotthànaü: Þ bråhi maïgalam-uttamaü.û
hoping for safety: Þ now please say what is the supreme blessing.û

 

2.         ßAsevanà ca bàlànaü, Þ paõóitàna¤-ca sevanà,
ßNot associating with fools, Þ with the wise associating,

            påjà ca påjanãyànaü: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
honouring those worthy of honour: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

3.         Patiråpadesavàso ca, Þ pubbe ca katapu¤¤atà,
Living in a suitable place, Þ formerly having done good deeds,

            attasammàpaõidhi ca: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
having the right aspiration for oneself: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

4.         Bàhusacca¤-ca sippa¤-ca, Þ vinayo ca susikkhito,
Having great learning and craft, Þ being disciplined and well trained,

            subhàsità ca yà vàcà: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
and whatever words are well spoken: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

5.         Màtàpitu-upaññhànaü, Þ puttadàrassa saïgaho,
Attending on one's mother and father, Þ looking after one's wife and sons,

            anàkulà ca kammantà: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
having work that is not confusing: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

6.          Dàna¤-ca Dhammacariyà ca, Þ ¤àtakàna¤-ca saïgaho,
Giving, and living by the Dhamma, Þ and looking after one's relatives,

            anavajjàni kammàni: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
(performing) actions that are blameless: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 
7.         ârati virati pàpà, Þ majjapànà ca sa¤¤amo,
Abstaining, refraining from bad deeds, Þ restraint from intoxicating drink,

            appamàdo ca dhammesu: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
being heedful regarding (all) things: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

8.         Gàravo ca nivàto ca, Þ santuññhã ca kata¤¤utà,
Having respect and being humble, Þ being satisfied and grateful,

            kàlena Dhammasavaõaü: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
listening to the Dhamma at the right time: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

9.         Khantã ca sovacassatà, Þ samaõàna¤-ca dassanaü,
Being patient and easily spoken to, Þ having sight of ascetics,

            kàlena Dhammasàkacchà: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
discussing the Dhamma at the right time: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

10.       Tapo ca brahmacariya¤-ca, Þ ariyasaccàna' dassanaü,
Austerity, living spiritually, Þ seeing into the noble truths,

            nibbàõasacchikiriyà ca: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
and experiencing Nibbàna: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

11.       Phuññhassa lokadhammehi, Þ cittaü yassa na kampati,
He whose mind does not waver, when it is touched by things of this world,

            asokaü virajaü khemaü: Þ etaü maïgalam-uttamaü.
being griefless, dustless, and secure: Þ this is the supreme blessing.

 

12.       Etàdisàni katvàna, Þ sabbattha-m-aparàjità,
Having done as here directed, Þ being undefeated everywhere,

            sabbattha sotthiü gacchanti: Þ taü tesaü maïgalam-uttamanû-ti.
they go everywhere in safety: Þ for them this is the supreme blessing.û

   

Verse of Blessing

Etena saccavajjena Þ sotthi te hotu sabbadà!
By this declaration of the truth Þ may you be safe at all times!

Etena saccavajjena Þ hotu te jayamaïgalaü!
By this declaration of the truth Þ may you have the blessing of success!

Etena saccavajjena Þ sabbarogo vinassatu!
By this declaration of the truth Þ may all disease be destroyed!
