A city in the kingdom of Anga. It was here that the Mahá Assapura and Cúla Assapura Suttas were preached by the Buddha (M.i.271ff.; 281ff.; MA.i.483).
According to the Cetiya Játaka, Assapura was built by the second of the five sons of King Upacara of Ceti, on the spot where he saw a pure white horse. It lay to the south of Sotthivatí, Upacara's capital. J.iii.460.
