A city in the Buddha's day, mentioned as lying on the route from Bávari's hermitage to Sávatthi (SN. vs. 1011).
According to the Mahágovinda Sutta (D.ii.) it was the capital of Avanti and was founded at the same time as Campá.
It was probably the capital of Southern Avanti, Avanti Dakkhinápatha, the capital of Northern Avanti being Ujjení.
In the Máhábhárata (ii.31, 10) Avanti and Máhismati are spoken of as two different countries.
