JBE Appeal Notice

Since it began publication in 1994 the Journal of Buddhist Ethics has been a free resource. We like it this way and want to keep the Journal free to anyone who wants to read it. But to carry on this way we now need your help.

WHAT WILL MY MONEY BE USED FOR?

The Journal is produced by a team of unpaid volunteers, and with the competing demands of a day-job they cannot always devote the hours needed to keep our publications up to date and implement innovations in website design. We would like to be able to offer our staff some remuneration to justify the time spent on JBE work, especially during busy periods such as when running one of our online conferences.

Like any organisation we also have general running costs and expenses. We need computer equipment, new software, and software upgrades. Occasionally we need to buy in professional technical expertise. We are extremely grateful to web-designer Betty Amailuk for the recent makeover to our website, but we cannot always expect people to donate their work for free.

The importance of having our own financial reserves was brought home to us when our site was taken off the air at the start of 2002 following a vandalism (hacking) incident. It took us six months to get back online, something that could probably have been done in a week if we had had the funds to pay for emergency expert help.

For all these reasons we need our own financial resources. We want to provide the same high standards as a journal run by professional publishers to our authors, and provide a first-rate service to our 6,000 subscribers. With your help, we can do this for a fraction of the cost of a commercial publishing operation.

HOW MUCH DO WE NEED?

To operate the journal we estimate that we need working capital of $15,000. If each subscriber donated just $3 we would easily make this total. Being realistic, however, we realise that not everyone is willing or able to donate funds.

For those who can, we therefore suggest a recommended minimum donation of $10 (approximately £7, €9, ¥1200).

With a modest but regular income we can ensure that the Journal of Buddhist Ethics will continue to win awards, remain the leading resource in its field, and maintain and improve on the high standards of service and quality publications that subscribers have come to expect.

HOW CAN I DONATE?
Making a donation is simple using the popular Paypal system.
