The
Senior Nun
Ajahn*
Candasiri was born in Edinburgh in 1947 and brought up as
a practising Christian. After graduating from university,
she practised meditation within several different traditions.
In 1977 she met Luang Por Sumedho and after attending retreats led
by him she became interested in receiving monastic training.
Ajahn Candasiri was one of the first four women to be ordained
as an Anagarikã, in 1979. she took the ten precepts
as a Siladharã* in 1983.
Since that time she has lived in community, either at Cittaviveka
or Amaravati, helping to establish the nuns' community and
training.
She has been living as senior nun at Amaravati since 1999,
but also teaches meditation retreats elsewhere in the UK and
abroad.
